The Honest Bali Digital Nomad Guide: What Nobody Tells You
I spent three months working remotely from Bali in 2024, and I'm going to tell you the truth that the influencer posts leave out — alongside everything that genuinely makes it one of the best places on Earth to live and work.
The Reality of the Internet
WiFi in Bali is a gamble. In Canggu and Ubud's coworking spaces (Dojo, Outpost, Hubud), it's fast and reliable. In your villa? Hit or miss. Get a local SIM card (Telkomsel) with 30GB for about $8 — it's often faster than the WiFi anyway.
Where to Actually Stay
Canggu is for surfers, digital nomads, and Instagram. It's buzzy, café-dense, and occasionally feels like a western town that happens to be in Bali. I loved it for the first month, then needed a break. Ubud is for the soul — jungle, temples, yoga, silence. Seminyak is where you go to spend money. Avoid Kuta entirely unless you enjoy chaos.
Cost of Living
I averaged $1,800/month total: rent for a private villa with pool ($800), food mostly from warungs ($200), scooter rental ($50), coworking ($150), entertainment and activities ($300), misc ($300). This is comfortable, not shoestring.
Getting Around
Rent a scooter from day one. Yes, it's slightly terrifying. Yes, you will be fine within 48 hours. Grab (the Uber of SE Asia) is also excellent and cheap for when you don't want to ride. Traffic in Canggu is genuinely awful 4–7pm — just don't go anywhere then.

Tips & Advice
- Get a Telkomsel SIM at the airport. 30GB for ~$8 is life-changing.
- Always negotiate prices at markets — starting price is usually 3x the real price.
- Rent a scooter but take 30 minutes to practice in a quiet area first.
- Carry cash. Many warungs and small shops don't take cards.
- Respect temple dress codes — bring a sarong or borrow one.
