Nairobi: Where Safari Meets City Life

Nairobi is the only capital city in the world where you can watch lions hunt with skyscrapers in the background. That sentence alone should be enough to book a ticket. But there is so much more to this city than its famous national park.

Nairobi National Park

Twenty minutes from the CBD, lions, giraffes, zebras, and rhinos roam an open savannah with the Nairobi skyline behind them. It's surreal. Book a dawn game drive (gates open at 6am) — the light is golden, the animals are active, and you'll be back in time for a late breakfast. Entry is $43 for non-residents. A half-day safari with a guide costs about $80–$100.

The Food Scene

Nairobi's food scene has exploded in the last five years. Carnivore Restaurant is the famous one — an all-you-can-eat grilled meat experience including game meats served on Maasai swords. But the real gems are smaller: Mama Oliech for the best fish and ugali in the city, Nyama Mama for modern Kenyan cuisine, and any roadside nyama choma (roasted goat) stall in Westlands.

Karen and Langata

The leafy suburbs south of the city are worth a full day. The Karen Blixen Museum (the "Out of Africa" farmhouse) sits at the foot of the Ngong Hills. Next door, the Giraffe Centre lets you feed endangered Rothschild giraffes from a raised platform — they'll lick pellets from your hand. Nearby, the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust rehabilitates orphaned baby elephants. Visit at 11am for the public feeding.

Maasai Market

The Maasai Market rotates locations daily — Tuesday is Kijabe Street, Saturday is the High Court car park. Soapstone carvings, beaded jewellery, kikoy fabrics, and Maasai blankets. Negotiate firmly but fairly. Prices typically start at 2–3x the fair value.
